CISI ICWIM Practice Questions with Worked Explanations

These five independent CISI ICWIM practice questions focus on calculations and applied reasoning. Each explanation shows the rule or process behind the answer so you can reuse it when the numbers or client facts change.

This is not an official CISI sample paper and it does not reproduce live examination questions. For qualification level, recognition, booking and the complete syllabus, begin with the CISI Wealth & Investment Management guide. How to Work Through the Questions

For each question:

  1. identify the syllabus topic before looking at the options;
  2. write the relationship or formula from memory;
  3. keep percentages and monetary units consistent;
  4. select the answer; and
  5. read the explanation even when you were correct.

A correct guess should remain in your error log as an uncertain answer. In the official exam, a familiar-looking option can hide a wrong unit, denominator or suitability assumption.

Question 1 of 5

Prompt

Worked Method 1: Percentage and Ratio Questions

Three questions above depend on choosing the correct relationship before entering numbers. The later attribution item is deliberately a subtraction exercise in monetary amounts; do not carry that shortcut into percentage-return attribution, where allocation, selection and interaction depend on benchmark and portfolio weights and returns.

Operating profit margin

The denominator is sales because the question asks what proportion of revenue remains as operating profit:

Operating profit margin = PBIT ÷ sales × 100

The most common failure is not arithmetic; it is using the wrong profit measure or denominator. Write the labels before the numbers.

P/E-implied price

The P/E ratio expresses price as a multiple of earnings per share:

Implied share price = prospective P/E × expected EPS

Check that earnings are on a per-share basis and use the prospective figure when the question provides expected rather than historical earnings.

Premium or discount to NAV

For a premium calculation, compare the difference between market price and NAV with NAV:

Premium = (market price − NAV) ÷ NAV × 100

If market price is below NAV, the result represents a discount. Keep the reference value consistent rather than switching to market price as the denominator.

Worked Method 2: Client-Advice Questions

Advice questions often contain a tempting product statement that is generally true but does not resolve the client’s facts. Use this order:

  1. Objective: what is the client trying to achieve?
  2. Time horizon: when will the money be required?
  3. Capacity for loss: what financial loss can the client absorb?
  4. Attitude to risk: how comfortable is the client with uncertainty and falls?
  5. Liquidity and commitments: what access may be needed?
  6. Existing position: what assets, liabilities, protection and concentration already exist?
  7. Recommendation: only now compare suitable actions or products.

In the final question, long-term growth does not cancel the client’s stated inability to tolerate a temporary fall. The conflict needs to be explored before recommending a high-risk allocation.

Build an ICWIM Error Log

Use one row for every wrong or uncertain answer:

DateElementError typeCorrect ruleFresh retest date
ExampleEconomics and Investment AnalysisWrong denominatorMargin uses sales as denominatorIn 2 days

Useful error types are:

  • knowledge: the rule or concept was missing;
  • application: you knew it but did not connect it to the facts;
  • calculation: formula, input, sign or unit error;
  • reading: you missed a qualifier such as most appropriate; and
  • timing: you knew the process but spent too long.

The purpose of the log is to change the next study session. A list of scores without causes does not tell you what to fix.

Progress to Full-Syllabus Practice

These examples concentrate on Economics and Investment Analysis, Collective Investments, Investment Management and Investment Advice. The official paper also tests the Financial Services Sector, Industry Regulation, Asset Classes and Financial Markets, and Lifetime Financial Provision.

Use the ICWIM syllabus and exam-tips guide to plan complete coverage. When you move to mocks, use fresh mixed-topic sets under time limits and review correct guesses as carefully as wrong answers.

Chapter 1: The Financial Services Sector

This chapter forms the foundation of the ICWIM qualification by exploring how the financial services sector is structured and why it exists. At its core, the sector serves three fundamental purposes: channelling money from those who have surplus capital (investors/savers) to those who need it (borrowers), enabling the transfer and management of risk through products like insurance and derivatives, and providing settlement and payment systems. The 'investment chain' is the central concept — it describes how money flows from individual investors through intermediaries (such as fund managers, custodians, platforms and pension schemes) to businesses and governments who need capital. Understanding each link in this chain is essential.

The chapter distinguishes between wholesale markets (where…

Write down the tested rule, repeat the calculation or reasoning without notes, map it to the official syllabus learning objective, and then solve a fresh question with changed facts.

3 Do these five questions cover the whole ICWIM exam?

No. The current exam contains 100 questions across eight syllabus elements. This page concentrates on worked calculations and application; it cannot represent the full specification.

4 Which ICWIM areas carry the most questions?

Economics and Investment Analysis and Investment Advice have an indicative 21 questions each, followed by Investment Management with 15. Candidates must still study all eight elements.
